VOBOC founder to address a prestigious group of cancer specialists on World Cancer Day

Doreen Edward is a speaker at Canada’s World Cancer Day Event: NOT BEYOND US a full day meeting organized by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer

February 4, 2015, Montreal: Today is world cancer day. Venturing Out Beyond Our Cancer (VOBOC) founder Doreen Edward will deliver a talk in Toronto this afternoon entitled ‘Engagement- the key to innovation – the key in fighting cancer’ to an audience of Canada’s top cancer researchers, physicians and health care professionals and federal and provincial politicians including the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Federal Minister of Health. The objectives of the full day World Cancer Day Event organized by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC) are to gain insights into emerging innovations in cancer control and share and celebrate the successes achieved in cancer control and reflect on opportunities for the future direction of cancer control.

“I am extremely honoured and frankly a little terrified to be speaking at this event,” says Ms. Edward. “I am one of a million cancer survivors in Canada and was asked to deliver the patient perspective talk. It’s a big stage and I am humbled to have been asked to address this prestigious crowd.”

In her speech Ms. Edward will talk about the power of patient and family engagement. “In my mind, apart from drugs or a cure to cancer, the inclusion and engagement of patients and those who support them in every facet of cancer care and cancer control is our single greatest and most untapped weapon in the war on cancer. Their insights and life experiences can help us become more efficient and allow us to be part of the new kind of partnership we need to go forward,” says Ms. Edward.
World Cancer Day is the one singular initiative under which the entire world can unite in the fight against the global cancer epidemic. It takes place every year on February 4. This year’s event is taking place under the tagline ‘Not beyond us’. World Cancer Day takes a positive and proactive approach to the fight against cancer, highlighting that solutions do exist across the continuum of cancer, and that they are within our reach.

World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer, and pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease.
